Tigray police start arresting demonstration organizers

Tigray Police have arrested six members from three opposition political parties, as well as three drivers and their assistants, who were conducting a campaign in the city of Mekelle to encourage people to participate in a peaceful demonstration scheduled for September 7, 2023, under the slogan ‘Solidarity for Radical Change.’ This demonstration was initially organized by the Tigray Independence Party, Salsay Weyane Tigray, and Biatona Party, and later, Arena and Asimba parties also joined the cause.

Mr. Tesfamical, a member of the organizing committee from the Biatona Party, posted on his Facebook timeline today that six party members, with two from each party, along with three drivers and their assistants, have been taken into custody by the police.

According to him, they are currently held at police stations in Kedamay Weyane, Hawelti, and Semen. Furthermore, the three vehicles used for campaigning, along with all campaign materials, have also been seized and are now located at the police centers.

The National Congress of Great Tigray (Baitona Party) and Salsay Weyane Tigray have also released statements confirming that the members of the campaigning committee were arrested and have called for their immediate release by the interim government and the army leaders in Tigray.
